Parent Guidance Sessions
Most work with children involves regular contact with parents in order to assess gains made in treatment. Some parents also find it helpful to schedule more frequent sessions for guidance in managing behaviors in the home and community. Information and support are also offered for navigating the school system (including special education settings), obtaining psychological evaluations, and other services that the child may be receiving, such as speech, occupational, and physical therapy. Having been trained in negotiating the various systems in which clients are involved, I am particularly adept in coordinating such services.
Parents may come with particular concerns regarding difficult and oppositional behaviors. In parent guidance sessions, parents learn effective behavioral strategies and ways of implementing these strategies that will result in more lasting change.
I am a strong believer that there is no formulaic approach to parenting. While some therapists may suggest a single manual or protocol to follow, in my practice, each family is unique and has their own particular needs. I tailor each treatment plan to the particular dynamics of each family and focus primarily on building strong and healthy relationships.
